A Bali honeymoon itinerary that works

Bali looks small on a map. In traffic it is not, and that one fact shapes every good honeymoon plan: fewer moves, two bases, and days out placed where the roads are short.

Most couples who come back unhappy from Bali did the same thing: a new hotel every second night and a tour every day. The island punishes that. An hour from the south coast to Ubud is common, the transfers on the listings here run from about an hour to about 80 minutes each way, and a sunrise trip starts with a pickup around 3 am.

The plans below use two bases, Ubud and the coast, and three or four days out. Every other day is yours: the pool, a long lunch, a walk at sunset.

The quick answer

For a Bali honeymoon, plan 7 to 10 nights with two bases: three or four nights in Ubud, then the rest on the coast. Book three or four days out, no more than one a day, and none on arrival day. Put the 3 am Batur pickup on a day followed by a slow afternoon, and book the Nusa Penida boat early in your coast stay so a spare day can absorb a weather cancellation.

Ubud first, coast second: the order most couples prefer.

How many days do you need in Bali for a honeymoon?

Seven to ten nights. That covers two bases, three or four days out and enough slow days to feel like a honeymoon.

Count it backwards. The flight in and the transfer to Ubud take most of day one. The move from Ubud to the coast takes half a day. The last day goes to the airport. Seven nights leaves you four or five full days, which fits three days out and a couple of pool days.

With ten nights you add a day out, a spare day and a second slow day on the coast. Beyond ten, consider an add-on away from Bali: the comparison guide covers the Gili Islands, Lombok and Komodo.

The day most couples build the trip around: mantas, Kelingking and GoPro photos of you both.

Is 7 days enough for a Bali honeymoon?

Yes, if it means seven nights and only two bases. With five nights or fewer, pick one base and two days out.

Seven nights is the most common length, and it works well when you resist the urge to see everything. Skip the north coast, the far east and the long day trips that start with three hours in a car. Ubud and one coastal area give you terraces, temples, a volcano at dawn, a reef and the cliffs at sunset.

Short on time? Stay on the coast only, take the Uluwatu sunset evening and a private day in Ubud, and keep the rest for the villa. It is a smaller trip, not a worse one.

What does a 7-night Bali honeymoon look like?

Three nights in Ubud, four on the coast, and four days out spaced so no two hard days follow each other.

Our 7-night plan, day by day:

DayBasePlan
Day 1UbudLand, private transfer, pool, early night. No tour.
Day 2UbudPrivate Ubud day: Tegallalang first, then Tirta Empul and the waterfalls
Day 3UbudBatur sunrise jeep (pickup around 3 am), sleep, then the riverside spa late afternoon
Day 4MoveKoi boat in the morning, transfer to the coast after lunch
Day 5CoastNusa Penida manta day from Sanur
Day 6CoastSpare day: the Penida backup if the sea cancelled day 5; otherwise pool, then Uluwatu at sunset
Day 7CoastSlow day; dinner cruise in the evening if you want one
Day 8Airport

Seven nights, four or five days out. If that feels like a lot, drop the koi boat and the cruise first. The order matters more than the number: no tour on arrival day, Batur followed by an easy afternoon, Penida with a free day behind it.

What does a 10-night Bali honeymoon look like?

Four nights in Ubud and six on the coast, with the same days out plus the fireflies evening, a day with your own driver and two real rest days.

Our 10-night plan:

DayBasePlan
Day 1UbudLand, transfer, rest
Day 2UbudPrivate Ubud day, early start
Day 3UbudSlow day; Taro fireflies and farm dinner in the evening
Day 4UbudBatur sunrise jeep, then the riverside spa
Day 5MoveKoi boat in the morning, transfer to the coast
Day 6CoastBeach and pool
Day 7CoastNusa Penida manta day
Day 8CoastSpare day for Penida; otherwise Uluwatu at sunset
Day 9CoastYour own car and driver for a route you choose, or a lazy day; dinner cruise at night
Day 10CoastSlow day, last sunset
Day 11Airport

Ten nights also lets you swap a coastal night or two for Sidemen or Amed in the east, if you want quiet more than beach clubs. Where to stay compares the areas.

The spa after Batur: the best way to spend the afternoon after a 3 am start.

Where does the 3 am Batur pickup fit?

On a day in your Ubud stay, not the first or last, and followed by a slow afternoon. The listing gives about 80 minutes each way.

The jeep tour runs 5 to 9 hours depending on the option, and guests talk about a 3 am pickup. Tamas, from Hungary: "Except that we had to wake up at 2.30 AM for the 3.00 AM pickup, everything was perfect from start to finish!"

From Ubud the drive to Kintamani is shorter than from the coast, and the listing names surcharge areas such as Uluwatu and Amed, paid to the driver. Book it from your Ubud base. Do not put it the morning after you land, or the day before a flight: jet lag and a 2:30 alarm are a poor mix with a long-haul flight.

No climbing, no headtorch: the private jeep drives you to the sunrise viewpoints and the hot spring after.

Why keep a spare day in a Bali itinerary?

Because boat trips depend on the sea. The Penida listing says the operator may cancel for sea or weather, with a new date or a refund.

A spare day costs you nothing if the boat goes: it becomes a pool day or the Uluwatu evening. If the boat does not go, it saves the day you booked the trip around. Put Penida on your first or second full day on the coast, not on the last.

Every day out on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can book early and still move things. Plan around big festivals too: ceremonies can close roads, as the Uluwatu listing warns.

How do you plan a Bali honeymoon, step by step?

Dates first, then the two bases, then the days out, then the paperwork. In that order.

  1. Pick the dates. Dry season if you can, and check Nyepi: 9 March 2027. See the season guide.
  2. Choose two bases. Ubud or the Ayung valley, then the Bukit, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur or Seminyak.
  3. Book the villa. A private pool matters more in Bali than in most places, because you will spend half your days there.
  4. Book three or four days out. The anchors: Penida, a private Ubud day, Uluwatu at sunset. Add Batur or the spa.
  5. Leave a spare day after any boat trip.
  6. Sort the entry forms. The Bali levy, the free All Indonesia arrival card and, for many passports, an e-VOA. The arrival rules post has the steps.

Two or three days with your own car and driver, on the route you choose: the easy way to fill gaps.

How long should a honeymoon last?

There is no rule. For Bali, a week is the minimum that feels unhurried, and ten nights is the sweet spot for most couples.

Long-haul flights change the maths. If the trip to Bali takes a day each way, a five-night stay leaves three good days, one of them lost to jet lag. Seven to ten nights gives you time to arrive, slow down and still do the things you came for.

Two weeks is a different trip: Bali plus an island or two nearby, or a slower pace with a third base in the east. Allan, from Australia, after the Penida day: "excellent tour! Wira was such a great guide and took care of us very well!" A day like that is worth building the rest of the week around.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough for Bali on a honeymoon?

It is short. Pick one base, two days out and leave the rest for rest. The transfers take a real share of five nights.

Should we stay in Ubud or on the beach first?

Ubud first. You get the early starts and cultural days done while you are fresh, then wind down by the sea.

How many tours should we book for a Bali honeymoon?

Three or four in seven to ten nights, one a day at most, with a spare day after any boat trip.

Can we do Nusa Penida from Ubud?

It is possible but long: the boat leaves from Sanur, about an hour from Ubud. From a coastal base it is far easier.
